Did you know there are over 10,000 varieties of tomatoes?

How do you choose the right tomatoes to grow? It can be very confusing but trust me when you know a little more about taste, texture and which ones are best for eating, cooking and preserving

Choosing the Right Tomatoes to Grow will be so much Easier

How about the meaty bright red plum-shaped Roma tomato, perfect for making tomato sauce, salads or salsas with a slightly sweet tangy taste? What about the small Cherry tomato, these perfect little juicy bites are great for children to grow, eaten straight off the vine, tossed through a salad or great for a school lunch box treat.

Or the large heart shaped Oxheart tomato, full of flavour, great for slicing in a sandwich or a sauceOne of my favourites is the green and yellow striped skin juicy Green Zebra tomato, it has a tangy flavour for that extra bite. Perfect to eat straight of the vine. Excellent in salads, fried in a gazpacho or a tomato sauce.

The classy generational Heirloom tomato, heirlooms are open-pollinated and come in all shapes and sizes just like you and me, such a diverse tomato you can have them in soups, salads, pasta, your favourite sandwich or in a tart. The firm unripe Green tomatoes with a tangy taste, as they have not reached full maturity. Perfect for pickling and of course the classic recipe of fried green tomatoes.

Then you have the Grape tomato another great tomato for children to grow, small and elongated, sweet tasting, which is great for snacking, school lunch boxesroasting or adding to salads.

Another favourite is the Yellow tomato which is milder and has a less acidic flavour. Adds that extra vibrant colour to a salad or pasta dish.

Oh, the Campari Tomatoloved for its sweetness slightly larger than the cherry tomato and another great tomato to snack on, put in a salad or roast with a leg of Lamb. Perfect on a pizza or in salsa. Pairs beautifully with mozzarella.

The plum Italian San Mariano tomato is rich in flavour and considered the best for making tomato sauce or tomato-based recipes, think Lasagna, spaghetti marinara. ‘

What about something different the Russian Black Kim tomato it is an heirloom beefsteak tomato and has a complex smoky flavour with a dark skin that looks almost black, which makes it perfect for slicing in a sandwich, tossing in salads, sauces or slicing with some mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil and salt on some toasted bread to make bruschetta.

The list goes on. This is a list of a few varieties I recommend getting started with.

Not only are tomatoes great to grow in your Home Kitchen Garden they are also a rich source of folate, vitamin C and potassium which makes them blooming magically.
